Members of the Maritime Movement Disorder Group (MMDG)



Dr. Robert Brownstone, MD, PhD, FRCSC
Dr. Brownstone is a member of the Department of Neurosurgery at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, and has particular expertise in Deep Brain Stimulation for Parkinson's and dystonia.  He is also a leading neuroscientist who heads the Motor Control Laboratory at Dalhousie University.

Dr. Harold Robertson, BA, MSc, PhD
Dr. Roberston's research is on gene expression in the brain; specifically, how gene expression is affected with diseases such as Parkinson's and Huntington's.  He was part of the team that carried out the first neural tranplantations for Parkinson's Disease and was a cofounder of the Brain Repair Centre.
Dr. George Turnbull, MCSP, DipTP, BPT, MA, PhD (Rhodes)
Dr. Turnbull's is Associate Dean in the School of Physiotherapy at Dalhousie University.  He founded the Maritime Parkinon's Clinic which aims to improve quality of life for individuals with this debilitating condition through specific tailored programs, and is actively involved in research.

Dr. Ivar Mendez, MD, PhD, FRCSC
Dr. Mendez is the Head of the Division of Neurosurgery at the QEII Health Sciences Centre.  He has a particular interest in functional neurosurgery, neural transplantation, and robotics in neurosurgery.  He also heads the Neurotransplantation Laboratory through Dalhousie University.

Paula Chiasson, MSc OT
Paula is an occupational therapist with the Division of Neurosurgery at the QEII.  She is the Program Coordinator for Neuromodulation, and her work focuses on neural transplantation and deep brain stimulation. Her interest in PD began in 1992 as a member of the Phase I neural transplantation trial.

Dr. Kerrie Schoffer, BA, MD, FRCPC
Dr. Schoffer is a Assistant Professor in the Division of Neurology at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, as well as running a private practice clinic.  After three years of fellowship training in Movement Disorders in Australia, she is currently director Movement Disorders Clinic and the newly established Maritime Huntington's Disease clinic  at the Halifax Infirmary.

Dr. Roger McKelvey, MD, FRCPC
Dr. McKelvey is a member of the Division of Neurology at the QEII Health Sciences Centre and also runs a private practice clinic in Dartmouth.  Dr. McKelvey has many years of experience in treating patients with Movement Disorders, and is a member of the Maritime Huntington's Disease Clinic.

Genetics
Jill Beis, MSc, CCGC
Jill Beis is a genetic counsellor in Maritime Medical Genetics Service (MMGS) at the IWK Health Centre.  With 18 years of varied clinical practice, including two as a research coordinator, she has developed a special interest in neurological and neuromuscular disorders as well as hereditary eye disease.  Other professional interests are in research ethics and growth and development of the profession of genetic counselling.



Meghan Ferguson, MSc, CCGC, CGC
Meghan Ferguson is a genetic counsellor in Maritime Medical Genetics Service (MMGS) at the IWK Health Centre.  Through her clinical career and research experience, she has developed a particular interest in neurological and neuromuscular disorders with special emphasis on the psychosocial issues surrounding predictive testing.  Meghan's other clinical interests include cancer genetics and pediatrics.


Neuropsychology
Dr. Shannon Johnson, PhD
Shannon Johnson is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Dalhousie University. She completed her doctoral training in Clinical Neuropsychology at the University of Victoria and specializes in neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders. Shannon has been involved in Huntington?s Disease research for over 15 years, with a recent focus on identifying cognitive and motor measures that are sensitive to the earliest changes associated with HD.

Dr. King has been practicing neurology since 1977, and has been involved in numerous clinical and pharmacological trials in Parkinson's Disease and other movement disorders.  He currently has a private practice clinic in Halifax.

Neuropsychiatry
Dr. Allan Cook, BSc (Pharm), MD, FRCPC
Dr. Cook trained at Queen Square in London, and is currently an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Dalhousie University.  He works with the consultation liason service at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, has an office practice as a neuropsychiatry consultant, and is an integral member of the multidisciplinary QEII Huntington's Clinic.

 
Dr. Eilleen Denovan Wright, PhD
Dr. Denovan Wright is involved in research for Huntington's Disease.
Dr. Mark Ludman, MD, FRCPC, FCCMG
Dr. Ludman is a clinical geneticist with a long-standing interest and experience in predictive testing.  He is presently a Professor and Head of the Division of Medical Genetics in the Department of Pediatrics, as well as a Professor in the Department of Medicine, in the Faculty of Medicine of Dalhousie University.  He is also the Physician Leader of the Maritime Medical Genetics Service, based at the IWK Health Centre. He is certified as a specialist in both pediatrics and medical genetics in Canada, the United States and Israel.
Dr. Lynette Penney, MD,FRCPC, FCCMG
Lynette Penney is a medical geneticist in the Martime Medical Genetics Service (MMGS) and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics.  As a new member of the MMGS she is keen to expand on her interest in predictive testing by becoming involved with the HD team.  Her other interests include cancer genetics, prenatal genetics and general dysmorphology

Dr. Sultan Darvesh, MD, FRCPC
Dr. Darvesh has a specialty interest in dementia and other neurodegenerative disorders.

Dr. Kyna Squarey, MD, FRCPC
Dr. Squarey is fellowship trained in Movement Disorders in Montreal and Ottawa.  She currently practices in Moncton, NB.

Barb Horner is trained as a social worker, and currently heads the Huntington's Society of Canada Nova Scotia and PEI Resource Centre.  Barb is also actively involved in the QEII Huntington's clinic.
